Running in period of a new motorbike

Every day, many motorbikes rolls out of dealers and showrooms. The first question raised from every owner is that "What's the top speed that i can ride till 1st service?". This is the time where you must be careful with your motorbike. Everyone says an average speed of 60kmph. But it'll not suit for all bikes and in all condition. So, let's clearly see about Run in period or Break in period of a motorbike..

What is Running in period..?

As we know, there are several moving components inside the engine. There have to be some amount of clearance between moving components inside a engine. In a newly manufactured engine, the clearance value will be always lesser. So, the engine needs to be settled down making it smoother. Thus, some time will be taken for the clearance to be improved.

Why Running in period to be followed..?

Automated robots manufacture the components needed for the motorbike. During manufacturing, all the sharp edges will be removed and made in such a way to fit precisely with one another on running. But practically, this can be done only by doing several kilometers. During this time, components rub one against another and sync perfectly. During this process, there are chances for metal chirps disassociate from parts, wiped by the engine oil and settles in the strainer. For this reason only, after several kilometers, it is always insisted to change motor oil ASAP.

If you ride your new bike in higher rpm's initially, there might be chances for piston getting seized because of low clearance and metal expansion due to heat. So, we have to be gentle in handling a new motorbike. If we rev too high, the wear and tear of the moving components will be high and emits more heat resulting in lower engine life. It is always suggested to maintain 60 percent of the total engine rpm. We are all provided with a owner manual of our vehicle. But none of use didn't go through it. All the details will be provided there.

In how much kilometers, the engine will set..??

As said early, we should not fail to leave our bike for initial services where engine oil plays a vital role. By an average, manufacturers says that it'll take about 500-750 kms for an new engine to set. But experts says that after 1500-2000 kms only, they are getting the softness only in the case of proper break in maintenance.

Things to be minded in running in period are as follows..

=> Try not to load anything weighs much to avoid stressing of engine.
=> Try not to accelerate suddenly. Accelerate gradually.
=> Maintain lower rpm.
=> Should be careful in oil changing intervals.
=> Try not to stress the engine.
=> In long rides, give regular intervals.
=> To maintain correct oil level and make sure that the coolant flows properly (in case of liquid cooling)
=> We have to leave the bike for initial services which is based upon kms or time
