Generally, motorbike is tuned for putting out more power. But, we can tune that power according to our need. We can tune it for getting more power or to obtain maximum mileage. In India, most of the motorbikes are tuned for getting good fuel economy where only few of them are tuned for more power. First of all, mileage not only depends on air fuel mixing system. It depends on several factors like tyres, suspension, load, resistances etc... Here we are going to see some tips for getting good fuel economy.
Brakes
It might sound silly. But these are one of the most important factor that most of us fail to look after. Front and rear brakes should not always lock the wheel. So we have to regularly check the brakes. The brake linings should always allow the wheel to rotate freely.
Riding style
Twisting the throttle may be very interesting. But when you do that, more fuel will be spent for that immediate throttle response. So, gradually accelerate. Avoid sudden twist of throttle. I've seen many were riding their bike with partially holding the clutch lever. The power produced by the engine is wasted here. So it is better to avoid these kind of habits.
Tires
The only contact between our bike and road surface is wheel. When the contact patch is higher due to lower inflation pressure, the mileage will drop automatically. So we have to maintain the correct inflation pressure always.
Stable ride
Riding at constant speed is very important for obtaining good mileage. Sudden acceleration will always consume more fuel as i said previously. Riding at constant speed say 45 - 55kmph in higher gear with minimal braking will lead you to good fuel economy.
Using kill switch
When the engine is idling over 30 seconds, it is better to switch it off to reduce fuel wastage.
Shift to highest gear
In my experience, the way to obtain a good fuel economy is, riding at constant speed say 40-50kmph at highest gear. Because in the top gear, the engine will not be stressed higher. Everything will be smooth at this point.
Tuning of fuel mixing system
In some older vehicles, due to vibrations, the air screw will be disturbed. A slight amount of change in those screw will bring a big impact in mileage. So we have to take care of that. In fuel injected bikes, we have to clean the throttle body regularly. The dust particles deposited in the throttle body may give wrong info to the sensors present and it'll affect the mileage. If every system is perfect, then we can tune our air fuel mixing system for better mileage.
Choose the right fuel
Avoid leaded petrol and use premium quality of fuel for good performance and mileage.
Taking care of sprockets
Worn out sprocket leads to slipping of chain which affects the performance and economy. Always maintain the correct chain tension and inspect the sprocket teeth to avoid slippage.
Servicing at right time
Changing of motor oil is very important as it lubricate and reduces the friction between moving components. If we fail to change the motor oil, then the engine will stress itself more to accelerate which sucks more fuel. Also applying grease in the bearings will reduce the resistance. In some cases, clutch plates also drastically reduces the mileage. So in general services, these things will be looked after making sure that we get a good mileage.
