Motorbike maintenance during lockdown

It's time to put your motorbikes into sleep mode. This means no daily commuting and long rides. So stay in your home, wear mask and stay safe. But we have to make sure that our motorbike is readily available once the lockdown is over. It is very important to maintain our motorbikes during these days because we know that the lot of money and hard work has been invested in it. Let us see some of the maintenance tips during this lockdown condition.

Cover it
It is very important to cover the motorbike with covers and should be parked in a secure place. It prevents the settling of dust, paint fading and from heat. It also prevent the bike from moisture. Avoid putting wet clothes over the bike. If you are not having the good cover, use waste blankets or any other cloth material to cover. But is advised to invest for a good cover which will be worth very much.

Look after the battery
If you are going to park your bike for the long time, make sure that you have disconnected the battery terminals. Remember that the negative terminal which is grounded should be removed first. Or, at regular interval of twice or thrice a day, start your bike and make it idle for 5-10 minutes. The battery will be recharged and all the components inside the engine will be lubricated regularly.

Crank it up regularly
Make sure that you start your engine and idle it for several minutes or take it outside along your street for just warming it up. When you do that, please follow the safety protocols.

Regular cleaning
Even though our bike is covered, it is good to clean our bike regularly. If you have seen my previous post, you can understand that. When we clean our bike regularly, we can come around various parts and components which drags us towards it and make us to learn about it more. Also when we clean, we may notice any damaged components or parts or any loosened nuts or bolts.

Use straight stand
If your bike has straight stand, use it. Because, when the bike is parked using side stand for a long time, the elbow in which the side stand is fixed might become weak. Using straight stand can keep the fuel and oil at balanced levels. It is also very easy to clean our bike when we use straight stand.

Use lubes
Lube the moving parts regularly such as brake levers, clutch levers to ensure the smooth functioning of it and to avoid rusting and jamming. Check for the chain condition. Clean the chain and lube it up if necessary.

Tyres
If your tyre has low inflation pressure or punctured, fix it soon. Because at this conditions, the whole weight of the bike is acting on it. It can damage the tyre sidewalls and create crack in it. So take care of that also.

If you are going to park your bike for a long time, follow the above mentioned steps and take care of you. There are also other parameters you have to take a look on it. For example wirings, lightning, security. Make sure your bike is parked in a secured place. For additional safety, you can use after market security systems also.
