Iridium sparkplugs

You can able to see sparkplugs in any gasoline powered engines. Though everyone knows the function of the ignition system, i wish to explain something basic about the ignition system to understand about the Iridium sparkplugs better. The main purpose of the sparkplug is to ignite the fuel air mixture present inside the combustion chamber thus forcing the piston to move down and making a power stroke. Those high voltage spark is produced with the help of ignition coil and sent to the plug via High Tension(HT) cable. So, we come to a conclusion that the amount of spark produced in the sparkplug is responsible for the healthy combustion process.

Most of the sparkplugs have copper core as center electrode. Compared to any other material used, copper is a good conductor of electricity. And also it have low melting point. So that, it is always covered with nickel alloys to protect it from the heat. According to the manufacturers, material used in the plug tip varies. For example, it can be a Iridium tip or a Platinum tip. Iridium have have high melting point that is 2454°C and have high strength. I've seen many, where they install these Iridium sparkplug in their motorbikes saying the performance of motorbike increases. But there are more reason behind it. Let's see them one by one.

All conventional sparkplugs fails to supply good intense spark if carbon is deposited in the plug tip. This will drastically change the intense of spark produced and affect the performance of the motorbike. Due to this, there might be chances for fuel air mixture not getting burned completely and getting released in to the atmosphere. The problem will also arise if the resistance of the plug increases. Generally, engine's head and plug's tip will be too hot because it'll be in the direct contact with the combustion chamber. So, if the temperature of the conductor increases, it's resistance will also increases. That's why manufacturers like Yamaha uses YRCS to cool down the sparkplug area when the vehicle is in running condition.

Myths about it
I've seen many of the peoples told that, when the moment they installed Iridium sparkplugs in their motorbike, the performance of their motorbike increases. They say after using it for a long time, the fuel efficiency increases. But its not like that. Iridium sparkplugs is all about longevity. It also does its job of igniting fuel air mixture like the normal one. The only thing here is, it lasts very long period of time and once if you have installed, you don't have to replace it for a long time. A normal plug lasts up to 40,000-50,000 kilometers depending upon its condition. A Platinum sparkplug can lasts up to 60,000-70,000 kilometers which again depends on its condition. Where the Iridium sparkplug lasts up to one lakh kilometers.

In normal sparkplugs, the electrode gap will be increased after using several kilometers. But in Iridium sparkplugs, the gap will not be affected much as said previously, it can last up to many kilometers. But make sure that you are aware of the fact that Iridium sparkplugs costs much more than the normal one.

Really does it increase the performance?

It does not make any change in less capacity engines or in your daily commuter. But it does in the motorbike with high power only if the High Tension(HT) cables, ignition coils, ignition system, ignition wirings were fully replaced with high performance parts. I would say, its really not necessary if you have to ride your motorbike for daily commuting and for long rides. If you are use your motorbike for track purposes where performance matters, you can go for it.
