Bharat Stage (BS) Emission Standards is the set of standards listed out by the Government of India to minimize the amount of pollutants released from all the petrol and diesel engines. We were following EURO Emission standards where the EURO Stage 1 is released first in 1992. In India we have started our first emission standard norms that is Bharat Stage 1 from the year 2000. It is also called as India 2000. After that, BS-II and BS-III were implemented from 2003 and from 2005. BS-IV was implemented in 13 major cities from 2010. It took 7 full years to implement the BS-IV norms all over India in 2017. The delay was due to some other problems. But, the real problem has already begun and most of the city's atmosphere were already polluted more.
That's why manufacturers were implementing various methods for controlling pollution for example, Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP), Secondary Air Induction System (SAI) etc.. After this, every manufacturers installed catalytic converters in their motorbikes which drastically reduced the emission of harmful substance in the atmosphere. Implementation of the fuel injection system also played a important role where the petrol is atomized perfectly and sent to the combustion chamber for burning which is better than the process happens in the carburetor. So the combustion happens completely and the fuel economy and performance also increased.
As said, pollution in some metropolitan cities were already increased and tons of harmful gases were already released into the atmosphere. One of the reason is the delay for implementing BS-IV norms all over India. So government this time strictly ordered to implement the BS-VI as soon as possible. It would have even delayed if we have gone through the fifth stage. Government of India gave some amount of time to research and develop new engines for 6th stage of norms which have to be more efficient and pollute less than the previous stage. And from 2020 April, all the vehicles comes with BS-VI emission standards. I hope now you have understood why BS-V has been skipped in India.
