Something you need to know about sparkplugs

In every motorbike, there'll be this small component present which is responsible for the burning of air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber. It ignites between 500-3500 times per minute. So, we have to take care of this component regularly to make sure it works well and good. It may look like a small piece of metal. But, without this sparkplug, our motorbike won't move. If your sparkplug is damaged, your mileage will be reduced, your engine will misfire and your engine troubles to start. To avoid these kind of problems, you have to regularly inspect the sparkplugs.

Inspection
After removing the sparkplug from engine, you can inspect them visually. The color itself tells about the life of the plug and how it performs. A plug with good condition will have brown or grayish deposits on the electrode tip. If you see that, you can install it in your motorbike, because it is in a good condition.

Dry black deposits on electrode and in insulator tip indicates carbon deposits. This happens when the engine is running most of the time with low speeds. It also happens due to idling for long time or the engine is running with too rich mixture.

Oily or wet black deposits on the electrode tip and in insulator surface indicates leakage of oil into the cylinder. It may happen if piston rings are damaged or if the valve and its guides are damaged. You have to find the source of leak and rectify the problem. If oil mixes with the fuel air mixture, irregular combustion happens and you'll get more white smoke.

Mechanically damaged plug can cause many problems including in cylinder. There are chances for getting poor mileage and performance. It breaks due to poor quality or more deposits in the tip. If you fail to inspect the plug regularly or if it has more deposits or not replaced for a long time, it'll break for sure.

Replacing
When its time for you to go for a new plug, you have to follow several steps. Because, it only decides the health of the combustion and performance of the engine. If you continue to run with damaged or deposited sparkplugs, surely you'll get poor mileage and performance. It is suggested to replace with the new one instead of cleaning and installing the old one. Because, if you try to clean and use the old one, the plug gap will be increased and this will affect the quality and intensity of spark produced. Bikes comes under the pulsar range have DTS-i engine. It may have twin or triple plug setup. So, while replacing, make sure that you are replacing it with a correct size. For example, in 200NS, the middle plug comes with bigger plug where the other two is in normal size. Try to replace the plugs within the kilometers suggested by the manufacturer.

After replacing, you have to make sure whether your engine runs good. Parameters like fuel air ratio, oil leakage, ignition system should be inspected regularly. Also inspect the plug cap or adapter. If you are using the new plug with damaged adapter, then also the performance drops.

If you are replacing with the new plug, the following steps will be useful.
* Turn off the ignition and allow your engine to cool down for sometime (if hot).
* Remove the plug adapter and inspect it thoroughly.
* With the help of plug spanner, loosen the plug from the engine. You can find plug spanner in your bike's tool kit.
* After removing the plug, inspect it thoroughly. If it is damaged heavily or with more deposits, surely you have to replace it with new one.
* Check multiple times whether the new plug is same one as the manufacturer suggested.
* Install it in the plug sleeve and tight it with the help of plug spanner. If you over tight, there are chances for thread getting damaged. So tight it at medium torque.
* After tightening, install the plug adapter.
* After finishing everything, just crank your motor to check whether everything works fine.
