Wankel, reed valve, transfer port, turbo,...... These are the words which became rare to hear. As technology advances, words like IMU, ECU, TCS, throttle bodies and electronics are becoming popular and we can able to see these things all most in every modern motorbikes. What's happening in the motorbike culture? Is there anyone out there like me with this thought? In this short article, let's discuss about this thing.
As technology evolves, motorbikes are becoming faster and faster and sure I'm accepting this. The implementation of Electronic Fuel Injection system alone helped much in increasing the top end performance of the engine. But think about this.. What is the purpose of a motorcycle. To travel from point A to B right? With all the technological advancements, the overall efficiency about different parameters are only improved such as fuel consumption and comfort.
But where's all that fun? Where's all that innovation? For example, in our market, Hero MotoCorp is well known for experimenting with different products in different segments. Some of the results are manufacturer's Cafe Racer model Splendor Pro Classic. It is one of the good old bike which I miss the most. Due to the poor sales factor, the bike maker has to discontinue that model. Another model which I loved is the Pulsar AS200.
But due to the same factor, it has been discontinued. Creativity and innovation dies here I'd say. What manufacturer expects is a good sales factor for a model with a affordable price. So they're going for a popular design and idea. I don't know why the bike makers are discontinuing the models which fails to sell high in numbers. Instead of discontinuing the model, they could upgrade and re-launch it.
This is where all the problem begins. For a matter of good sales factor, they're going with the popular model and makes profit. I accept that the point technological advancement is much important in satisfying the emission norms. But what we expect is innovation both in terms of tech and feel. The feel I get when I see a Continental GT 535 or a 220F or a Splendor Pro Classic or a AS200 or a Diesel Bullet can't be explained and can't be compared with the modern motorbikes.
There's also a another reason which is none other than the social media platforms. If anything gets popular or gets a good review, everyone goes after it without inspecting it physically just because the model is so popular. Before buying a model, a perfect comparo should be done and should be bought for the right purpose. Those were the days where there's no traction control system, no Antilock Braking System and no modern electronics.
With the complete absence of safety, bikers of those days enjoyed a lot and achieved a Ton. Just simple mechanisms and more innovations helped motorbikes to drag our attention and eyeballs like anything. I know you'll be confused right now on what I'm trying to say. But if you really enjoyed riding a motorbike and knows about it better, you'll get the point what I'm trying to convey and also I'm wishing the manufacturers to develop new products which remembers the good old days with innovative stuffs.
