After a long wait with a lot of speculations, TVS Motor Company has introduced the new neo retro scrambler themed motorcycle named Ronin. The letter R was teased several months back and we all thought that the upcoming motorcycle is going to be named as Retron, a full fledged retro themed motorcycle. But after that, the company trademarked a name Ronin and finally they've managed to launch the same. In this short article, let's discuss about some interesting factors and my thoughts about it.
In understanding the customer's needs, TVS has played a nice role by fabricating each and every parameter of the motorcycle according to that. The price starts from Rs 1,49,000 ex-showroom and offered in multiple variants which is none other than the color options. Let's jump from the aesthetic factor to the design and mechanical specs.
The first thing which I've noticed is the factor which stays true to the term Scrambler. Yeah... Ofcourse it's not a retro themed one but neo retro. Fuel tank's and seat's base line, they're linear which gives a nice feel and touch of a scrambler model. Fuel tank is tear drop shaped and the seat is lean single piece. There are no unwanted rear panels. The side panels too looks simple with the RONIN badging in it. The rear end is equipped with the conventional bar type grab rail which also looks very practical.
Both the mud guards too looks simple and increase the overall aesthetic value. The engine and all other components are mounted in a split type double cradle frame which is suspended using a monoshock(7 step adjustable) at the rear and USD forks at the front. Fuel tank's capacity is 14L and the seat height & ground clearance comes by 795mm & 181mm respectively. The overall weight comes around 160kg. Front end is equipped with multispoke alloy which is wrapped with 110 section rubber and the rear end is equipped with 130 section rubber. Braking duties are handled by 240mm disc at the front and 300mm disc at the rear where the details of the calipers are not mentioned. ABS channel varies from single channel to dual channel according to the variants and it also gets multiple modes such as rain and urban.
Coming to the heart of the matter, Ronin is powered by a new 225.9cc single cylinder, oil cooled, SOHC, 4V engine which spits out 20.4PS & 19.93Nm of power & torque at 7750 & 3750 rpm. I heard that the engine is developed from the existing Apache 200. The engine is paired to a 5 speed transmission system with the help of assist & slipper clutch. This power pack will compete against the new gen Pulsar and the upcoming RE models.
Lighting duties are handled by multiple LED units at the front and single strip at the rear which looks cool. Turn winkers are also LED units and the front face has got a T shaped pilot lamp which some may like and some may not. Another thing which I've noticed is the chain cover which looks different. The swingarm is box section and the design of the chain cover will increase the longevity of the drive chain by preventing it from the unwanted mud and dust.
Sitting above the handlebar is a asymmetrically mounted single pod round shaped digital unit which includes the basics like speedo, tacho, gear position, odo, distance to empty, ETA etc... Speaking about the handlebar, it is raised & wide and together with the center set foot pegs, I expect it will give the rider a comfortable riding stance. As we all know, it comes with a connectivity feature which I don't like talking about it too much. Other features includes TVS's glide through technology, integrated starter generator system, engine inhibitor and adjustable levers.
My thoughts
I very much expected a motorcycle with retro touch where everyone started to take a look at it. To be honest, this motorcycle's basic frame have a greater eligibility to be a scrambler model with some things on & off. Simple halogen bulbs, wired spoke wheels with multipurpose rubbers and a twin pod analog controls for speedo and tacho would've been a great touch. I agree that the world is moving towards tech related stuffs but it would've been even more great atleast if the manufacturer offers this one in a separate variant. But in this form, this model from the manufacturer will stand down as a perfect competitor against its rivals such as upcoming RE models, Jawa and Yezdi models.
