Do you ever had a thought of going back in time? I always had that thought of going back in time. Exactly to mid 50's when motorcycling and cafe racer culture started to bloom. Those bikes with lowered handlebars, humped rear seat, repositioned foot pegs, upswept exhausts and with more mechanical components than electronics were ruling the street those days. Achieving a Ton (100mph) were the main goal of bikers those days. And most importantly, they've achieved it with those stunning carbs. Achieving a Ton with less electronic components and with more mechanical components was very much fun back those days. Its just the art of modifying and tuning the motorcycles. Not only aimed for aesthetics but for performance. Now only we have that features like ABS, traction control, rider modes, quickshifters etc... But at those days, with complete absence of safety and technology, they were happily riding with their motorbike and achieved whatever they want. With those carburetors, they managed to achieve their goal. In my point of view, is there anything more pleasurable than kick starting our motorbike and rev it or seeing a needle of analog tacho reaching the red line?
Why do we need technology in motorbikes? The answer is to improve our safety and comfort. But, electronics have been implemented in motorcycles only to increase its performance. The main reason for the evolution of technology in motorbikes is fuel injection. In carbs, the valve or lift will allow the fuel and air into the cylinder with respect to our throttle input. The system fully consists of mechanical linkages for actuation. But they found lag and error in linkage mechanism and in fuel mixing system. At 60s, modern technology started to evolve. They implemented that technology in motorbikes also. What they've done is, mapping a table for rider's throttle input and amount of fuel should be injected to the combustion chamber for the given throttle response. After implementing this, throttle lag is reduced and performance of the motorbikes increased drastically. This is also the point where more and more electronically oriented products started to appear in bikes and just buried the old culture. For example electronic ignition, ABS, digital consoles etc...
I can't understand several things. The main motto for developing technology in automobiles is to increase our safety and comfort. At the same time of advising not to use mobile phones while driving, giving us a big touch screen infotainment system does make any sense? Can we avoid accidents or can we ride safely? I agree that the electronic ignition and injection systems reduces the pollution and boosts the power of the vehicle. But really do we need implementation of technology other than this ignition and injection? My point is modern bikes have more power and can go faster due to electronics and technology advancements. But it just lost souls that old motorbikes have. I think its good to limit technology in motorbikes and should go back in time to design and manufacture the golden era of motorcycles. Surely everyone doesn't like vintage motorbikes. But i think we have to bring back the old culture of motorcycling by limiting the technology and using only stuffs that we need. Just you have to think. Giving features like quickshifters, launch control etc.. in a street bikes makes no sense unless you use it for track purposes.
Today we have lot of unnecessary technology that we don't need for our motorcycles. Motorcycling is a form of meditation. Motorcycling is done for many reason. To disconnect you from this world, to find out who you are, to know about you deeper and to explore the world. Its totally a different thing when you see it from other perspective. We don't need any technology for this. We just need motorbike which have good and old soul.
