In one of my posts, I've mentioned that why Governments are not taking any steps in developing the conversion kits instead of launching new EVs to our markets. Instead of going for a new EV, we can install a conversion kit in our existing vehicle just by replacing the conventional IC engine. This saves much amount of money and also helps to restore our old vehicles instead of scrapping it. This question emerges inside me whenever I see any news about the electric scooters or motorbikes. Now, Karnataka government is planning to introduce the conversion kits for the already existing vehicles via new startups.
Karnataka is ahead of other states when it comes to electric vehicles and battery storage policy as we can see, much of the startups and EV manufacturers are from Karnataka. But the government is not satisfied with the adoption speed by people. The government is working on e-mobility by putting much effort to reduce the emission and also cheap cost will attract more customers, said by Industries Minister Murugesh Nirani to Economic Times.
As petrol prices are increasing day by day, this new emerge of the conversion kits will attract more customers as they can replace the engine with the battery, motor and the controller kit. Many startups in the cities like Pune, Gurgaon, Bengaluru, Chennai etc.. is working on the conversion kits to make the vehicle a fully electric or a hybrid one. Until the existing scooter's or motorbike's life is done, people won't switch to EVs. The only way to boost the rate of adoption is the conversion kits, said by CEO of Bounce, a ride share company which converted about 100 existing bikes to EVs successfully.
The industries department also mentioned that, before presenting it to the Cabinet for approval, Nirani and finance department will review the policy frame work once finalized. The industries department is also expecting a good thing to happen in getting the approval for the conversion kits as it'll gain much attention within a short period of time. Firstly, it seems like they're concentrating more for the two and three wheelers followed by the cars.
Last year, I heard about a institute where they converts a gasoline powered mopeds into a battery & motor powered with the help of a conversion kit. They also had a kit in which it can be fitted on a bicycle. But, the range of coverage it offered is very low as it suits very much for city commuting and for short ride purposes. My thought is like, before implementing the conversion kits, battery technology should also be improved both in terms of range of coverage per single charge and the charging time. Range anxiety is the only thing which prevents the people going for EVs. Conversion kits provided with good range of coverage per single change will attract more customers and also the adoption rate will increase drastically....
