Yamaha has announced the launch of new Ray ZR 125 Fi Hybrid in our country. The street rally version of the same is also launched. The scooter is starting from Rs 78,110 ex-showroom Tamil Nadu. Few months back, Yamaha has introduced its Hybrid tech in the scooter named Fascino. Now, they've managed to introduce the same in their another flagship scooter aiming at better sales. Firstly let's discuss about the normal variant with hybrid tech followed by the street rally variant.
The manufacturer offers the scooter in two variants namely drum and disc. LED headlamp setup and Bluetooth connectivity feature comes only in the disc variant. The design elements of the scooter are retracted from the previous version. This scooter's legroom looks better than that of its competitors. Turn indicators are all halogen where LED indicators are available as an accessory. It also features a LED position light. The only new parameter which have been added is hybrid tech. But, its like a mild hybrid system.
As we all know, magneto unit linked to a crankshaft is responsible for producing the AC voltage which is required for ignition and battery charging purpose. Now this magneto unit itself acts as an starter motor which is called as Smart Motor Generator (SMG). The same system is also known as Alternator Current Generator (ACG) starter which is used by Honda on their scooters. Now, what Yamaha had done is utilizing the same magneto unit for other purpose. When the scooter is accelerating from a stop, this magneto unit starts to act like a motor and helps by assisting the engine which improves the drive force at the rear wheel by 30% and it cutoffs automatically after 3 seconds or after closing the throttle. The manufacturer claims that, this helps very much in conserving the fuel. Now due to this arrangement, the engine also can be cranked very quietly without making much noise which Yamaha calls as silent start feature.
The engine is a air cooled, SOHC, 2 valve, 125cc unit which churns out 8.2PS of power and 10.3Nm of torque at 6500 and 5000rpm respectively. It also gets a automatic start & stop system in which the engine stops when at stationery and cranks when the throttle is twisted. It comes with a 21L under seat storage capacity and a inbuilt side stand cutoff feature. Fuel tank capacity is 5.2L. Front end gets a telescopic where the rear end is equipped with a monoshock. In drum variant, braking duties are handled by a drum brake at both the ends where the disc variant uses a 190mm disc at the front only. Rear end of the disc variant tends to continue the drum brake system in which it is assisted by a Unified Braking System in all the variants.
Both the disc variant and the street rally variant gets a Bluetooth connectivity feature via a app name Yamaha Motorcycle Connect X in which different info like riding history, locate my vehicle, parking record and answer back can be accessed. Drum variant starts from Rs 78,110 ex-showroom Tamil Nadu and offered in two color options that is cyan back and metallic black. Disc variant starts from Rs 81,110 ex-showroom Tamil Nadu and offered in 6 different color schemes including cyan blue, matt red, metallic back, racing blue, reddish yellow cocktail and a traditional MotoGP edition. Racing blue, reddish yellow cocktail and MotoGP edition alone cost about Rs 82,110 and Rs 82,610 respectively.
On the other hand, street rally version gets a block pattern tyres, a stylish metal plate at the side body works and a rim tape. In addition to that, it gets a brush guard similar to the knuckle guard which helps very much in case of any accidents. Other than that, everything tends to continue the same as the normal variant including the engine, instrument console and other features. Disc variant is only offered in this version of the scooter. This scooter starts from Rs 85,110 ex-showroom Tamil Nadu and offered in two color options that is matt copper and sparkle green.
