Benelli Imperiale 400 : A machine with timeless classic design

Not only the Classic 350 from Royal Enfield is only a motorbike with pure retro classic design. There are also some models from other manufacturers including this Imperiale 400 which is also a machine fabricated with retro design elements. We're seeing about retro machines every Sunday and it's time to see about the Imperiale 400 from the Italian manufacturer. To be frank, this machine is a treasure for hunters who looks for an entry level retro models and this directly competes against the Classic 350.

Design elements
By looking it from the side, it do remember us the Classic 350 slightly. Like all other retrosters, the motorbike is fitted with a teardrop shaped fuel tank, vintage styed split seat assembly, minimal body works, round shaped headlamp, rear view mirrors and turn winkers. It contains a traditional double cradle frame where the rear end has also got a simple tail lamp with chrome finish. Coming to the chrome finish, it still misses out the same in the exhaust muffler & header and in both the fenders. But, it still looks perfect also without it and the rims are also finished in chrome which adds some more value to the motorbike.

Footpegs are positioned slightly at forward position and the handlebar is raised. Both of them along with a seat height of 780mm gives the rider a upright riding position & relaxed ergonomics. The seat height is somewhat lowered where it suits perfectly for all kind of riders. Fuel tank's side is present with rubber grip pads which helps to hold our legs firmly while cruising.

Power source
It is a single cylinder, SOHC, air-cooled, 4V/C unit producing about 21PS @ 6000rpm and 29Nm of peak torque @ 3500rpm which results in a instant torque delivery. Engine is mated to a 6 speed transmission system with no modern tech features which is well & okay for a retro roadster. If you need a machine loaded with modern features such as traction control, launch control etc.... this is not a machine for that. It's only about the feel & ride quality.

Hardware & others

Front end is equipped with 41mm telescopic forks where the rear gets a twin struts which is pre-load adjustable. Anchoring duties are done by 300mm single disc with 2 piston caliper upfront and 240mm disc with single piston caliper at the rear. Fuel tank capacity is 12L where the front & rear gets a 19" & 18" spoked rims. Coming to the instrument cluster, dual analog dials were present for both speedometer & tachometer which is a nice touch indeed and the inclusion of small LCD display in the speedo dial and in the center displays various info like fuel level, trip meters etc.. It also doesn't get any connectivity feature and navigation assist system.

My opinion
Even though the bike is finished with some chrome elements such as rear view mirrors, headlamp, levers, turn indicators, it still misses out chrome elements in some parts like both the fenders, exhaust pipe along with the header pipe and grab rail. But, the way in which the manufacturer provides this motorcycle itself perfect I'd say and as said previously, this machine is a piece of treasure for the retro collectors and lovers.
