• At the EICMA 2021 show in Milan, Royal Enfield has unveiled a new concept named SG650 Twin. We know that SG stands for Shotgun and it is a bobber based motorbike. As unveiled now, we can expect the bike maker to launch this model sometime by next year.
• According to Mark Wells, Royal Enfield's chief of design, the idea was to challenge its design team to explore the possibilities of motorbikes with modern techy stuffs evolved from classic styled machines. Many of us love their machines only due to the old school stuff and analog things...Right? He also mentioned that the company is in transition and developing new products with the same soul and with modern tech underneath it. Simply, this model represents what a neo retro from the manufacturer would look like.
• It do look like the motorbike is inspired from the 650 twins.. But definitely not. The frame used here is completely different and similar to the one used on the Classic and Meteor models. But the fuel tank here looks similar to that of the Interceptor and it is CNC milled from solid billet.
• Front end is finished in polished aluminum and consists typical RE design elements such as tear drop shaped fuel tank, round shaped headlamp, raised handle setup, retro styled tail lamp, hand stitched leather seat and bar end mirrors. Turn indicators looks like they're LED units. What attracted me much is the simple headlamp cowl which suits the motorbike perfectly.
• For the first time, suspension duties are here handled by USD forks at the front. Rear end gets conventional twin struts and discs at both the ends takes care of the braking duties with integrated ABS. Single piece retro themed floating seat improves the bobber look very much and other components such as engine block and exhaust pipe including the header are totally blacked out. Left side of the crankcase and engine head are partially finished in polished aluminum.
• Engine here is the same unit which does job on the Continental GT650 and Interceptor 650. Though the engine details haven't been revealed, we can expect that the engine will be tuned down to enjoy this motorbike at minimal speeds. As this model represent the transition from analog to neo retro age, upcoming models from the bike maker will be radical which also makes us wait eagerly for their launch.
