Four years of Automobile Engineering

I always had a thought of writing this content to share my experience which I gone through. Automobile Engineering is a good branch of engineering indeed. But, if you decided to study this branch of engineering, surely you'll face many struggles and negative vibes. Before joining, I've received many negative vibes which pushed me to the negative thoughts. The lines which I've received from many is like Automobile Engineering doesn't going to have any scope in the future. If you take Information Technology course as your career, your future will shine and you'll earn handful of money. But what they forget to ask is about the things we like. I'll say this is one of the main problem in our country which is wandering wide over. They fails to notice or know what we like and makes us to join in a institution irrespective of our interest. But, there's also another wrong opinion particularly on this Automobile Engineering. It's like, instead of taking Automobile Engineering as your career, if you take Mechanical Engineering, you'll get a job at any field and you can gain more amount of knowledge on automobiles and stuffs too. But, its not like that. Some of my school friends too joined Mechanical course in my college where only in a single semester, they've witnessed automobile engineering as a subject in which they've learnt only the basics which we've gone through all the four years. Mechanical Engineering totally differs from the Automobile Engineering where you'll gain more knowledge on production, manufacturing and related stuffs. In Automobile Engineering, manufacturing subjects were given less importance where some of the core subjects were given much importance. What I'm trying to say is, before trying to convince or provide guidance to any of the students, the person must know about the syllabus coverage and must know the difference between the two branches. Finally, I took Automobile Engineering in a private college and I took this branch only out of my passion and love towards motorbikes. Or otherwise, I may just took any other branch for name sake and to get a degree.

Four years of Automobile Engineering

At the time of joining, I just went to the laboratory and felt very much excited to see a dismantled engine, bearings and other engine components present all over the place and the fragrance of the motor oil excited me even more and sparked something inside me. But, in reality, we're allowed to work on the engines after completing several semesters where it depends on the college we choose. In the first two years, you'll study the basics of engineering like engineering mechanics, engineering graphics, strength of materials etc.. You may think why I have to study the subjects which I already gone through in my school days like engineering physics, chemistry and mathematics. But that thought have a valuable reason which I explain later. Another misconception is laying widespread all over our society which is about the grade which we obtain. The grade we obtain in each examinations doesn't have any relation with the knowledge we've gained and you can't able to judge a student with a grade they obtained in the examinations. Those who follow my blog posts regularly know that I'm very much interested in designing and drawing. In the first semester, all branch will have a subject named Engineering Graphics in which the basics of the engineering drawings will be gained. At the semester examination, I scored a good grade on these particular subject and obtained a poor grade in Engineering Mathematics in which I'm very much weak. So, a person will be confused by seeing the grades which I've obtained in my first semester. Another fact is that, good grades and CGPA plays an important role in entering into the top core companies.

Another most important thing which you have to do is the self learning. During my second semester, without understanding the importance of the basic subjects, I felt like why the syllabus doesn't have any core subjects even after completing a semester. So, I started to learn something about the engines on my own by going through YouTube videos and by reading some books. Even though I had a wrong thought, it became a advantage to me. Learning things by self learning in advance allowed me to gain knowledge on the things which isn't present on the syllabus. Another thing is, while going to the semester examinations, I watch some YouTube videos and take up my examinations directly in which I scored decent grades. This is the second important thing in engineering. Mugging up anything and vomiting the same in the examinations doesn't help you in any ways. Engineering aren't meant for mugging up and vomiting the same. Engineering are meant for understanding the concepts either by listening the lectures or referring the books or going through YouTube videos. If you write what you've learnt in a simple manner on the examinations, surely good grade follows you. I've followed the same till my last semester and this is also the reason for obtaining poor marks in my 12th grade where they expect everything as same in the book.

At my semester holidays, a friend of mine asked me to tune the carburetor of his motorbike for obtaining good mileage. At that time, I know only two screws will be present at the carburetor for tuning and I don't know which is which and how to do it. At that time only, I realized that I lacked much amount of practical knowledge. In theories, you'll study only about the basics of the carburetor with a simple structure. But in a real world carburetor, there'll be separate passage for air during idling and acceleration. Surely, you have to dismantle and inspect each and every part to understand the working principle. So, I started to refer even more YouTube videos and to pay much attention on the lab sessions.

I've mentioned that the more importance should be given to the basic engineering subjects. For example, if you take any sensor in a automobile for example Throttle Position Sensor, knock sensor, oxygen sensor etc.. it'll work on the basic laws of physics and if you read about the octane number of gasoline, some basics of that already should be well known. If we fail to go through the basics, it'll be even more difficult to learn the subject. Gaining good grades helps only in entering into good companies where gaining practical knowledge and about other stuffs which is out of the syllabus will improve us more and more. Every college having Mechanical and Automobile courses surely will have a team for Baja SAE and Supra SAE or for Formula Bharat. By joining these teams, you can get even more practical knowledge by doing a actual off-road vehicle or a race car.

Like that, I've joined a go-kart racing team in which the team have to design, fabricate and build a go-kart which is to be participated in a competition. I'll say, by joining this team, I gained more and more knowledge on designing and about engines. Other than that, I gained proficiency in welding and other fabrication works. From my childhood itself, welding works had a separate attention of mine. So I practiced and got more experience on this welding works and so I joined as a powertrain member in the team. Many of the people have a thought like welding and fabrication works are a low grade of the job. It's not like that and every jobs are in equal grade and we have to respect each and every job. Surely, many have to change their thoughts and ideas regarding this. After fabricating the vehicle, we went to Kari Motor Speedway which is in Coimbatore for the competition and its a whole new level of experience there. We cleared technical inspection and prepared for the brake test. At that time, chain guard of the vehicle started to gave us trouble which ended up in failing the test. But, its not a problem. At the end of the day, its not about the struggles or about the problems we face in between the team members. Its about the feel, the knowledge and the experience we gained through the work.

When you're at the final year, it'll be the most important period of your lifetime. At that time, campus interviews will be started and everyone will be in a hurry of getting a job. Unfortunately, last year of my course were continued fully at online due to the pandemic situation. I dreamt of going to the laboratories and working for hours to improve me more. Everything just faded away and due to this situation, companies started to limit the recruiting process as some of the companies stopped the recruiting process. Here comes the most important thing. Due to this, most of them started to prepare coding and related stuffs and got placed in the IT companies. One of the most important thing is to maintain the track which is meant for us. The way in which the training has been given pushed the students towards IT side. Even, there's a friend of mine who is also very much interested in motorbikes and also we always talks about motorbikes. We also had a plan of building a custom Cafe Racer motorbike. But, at the pandemic time, he got placed in a IT company. I don't have any rights to interfere in his personal things, I know. But what I'm trying to say is, we have to maintain our track even though we face much struggle. According to me, getting a job irrespective of the background is useless. For that, you must've joined IT branch instead of Automobile branch. The time which is spent for gaining both theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge and the time which is spent for developing more in a particular field will become useless if you work in a job with irrespective field. As we know, the world is moving towards electrification. For that, everyone is going for IT related stuffs and for IOTs. But I love pure mechanical stuffs which pushed me to go towards mechanical side instead of technology. This helped me to follow my track throughout my last 3 semesters and I'm happy that I still roll for what I like.

At the time of completing, many of us have a thought of going for a job just to earn money due to some money problems. But according to me, going to a job irrespective of the field is okay for the above mentioned situation. But, doing something related to what we've learnt is still a better thing.

Its not like no jobs are out there for automobile students. We have to open our eyes wide open and have to follow our passion. If passion is meant everything, then salary should not become a matter. If salary does matter, you can work at any field. This course helped me to stay on my track and makes me to learn new things even after completing the course.
